I think it was ahead of its time. I think the multi-part thing was jarring because you had to search everywhere for each part and since it wasn't a popular game it was a mess. It was so rare to find in game stores and ebay took advantage of that. It didn't do anything unique on the dungeon crawler end to warrant people to search out for the next part really.
However, I think it'd be much more successful if they rebooted the series and sold it as an episodic game now. Since it's all the rage these days, they could easily make it a four part episodic game.

Nah the butler was one of the 3 people you could have as allies in the varying dungeons. I remember between dungeons you could switch out what allies you used in each dungeon, but out of everyone I think only the blonde chick had healing powers.
And they always kidnapped her right before you entered the last dungeon of either of the two segments of the game and then returned her only during the final bosses in those dungeons. I also remember the final bosses of each segment. The first segment was a military man in a giant mech, and the second segment was a demigod like being of the apocalypse... in a giant mech.
And I do agree, it was challenging but fair.
