It depends on what you expect. Most of these aren't palaces but castles/citadels, which serve a different function than to be impressive on the inside. Still a lot of them are beautiful on the inside as well, I've visited quite a few in Europe and India. But yes, the spectacular location and layout of most of these buildings are their main impressive features.

dunno. i have a friend who studies this archeology and history shit. you put some kind of x-ray thing on the ground and scan if there are traces of massive walls or buldings. so you can find pretty much but its hard to difference walls and stone buildings if the stones were used to build somewhere else and stuff. you get a pretty accurate scan of the surroundings, the other shit is imagianation.. trail and error until its mostly perfect, but never 100% accurate.
