I like feeling and smelling the weed while i break it up and I like the way it burns better. A bit slower and less hot, so oyu lose less second hand smoke in between hits. I know you can pack more weed in your bowl if you grind it up but I don't mind taking a little extra time. I usually only grind if I'm gonna roll a joint/blunt just so it doesnt turn out lumpy

Most of the time I just roll the bud between my finger and thumb and it turns into a nice powder. Then I wipe the remaining trichromes off my finger into the paper. Obviously there's some loss, but 90% of it ends up onto the piece of paper/magazine I break it up on. Then I fold it in half, dump it into the joint paper and roll.
Say what you want, but there's really minimal loss in the way I do it. The whole process takes probably less than two minutes.
There's always going to be a small loss no matter how you do it, save just jamming a nugget into your bowl or bong.
I don't ever really break it down when I pack a bowl, just break off chunks and stick them in.

Fluffy weed, aka airy buds is a side affect of temps being too high, hence the buds develop fluffy and airy to keep the resin glands from getting too warm, and to prevent trapped moisture causing mould outbreaks.
Grow in optimal conditions and you'll get thick, dense buds.
