I didn't think the story was weak. It was ample for what it was trying to do: Put John in a situation where he's forced to go up against the Russian mob.
Same with Mad Max: Fury Road. Did it have a really simple story without any twist and turns? Yes
Is that a bad thing? No.

Why do people even like French movies? What little plot that exists in the movie claws like it'll be beaten if it goes anywhere. The main characters almost never do anything productive, and when they do it's some emotionally driven nonsense.
Most of the time the characters learn virtually nothing. I am all for seeing a peice of someone's life, but even existentialist authors had major character progression during their stories. French movies are boring, bland, and a waste of time.
