I hated FF8. Squall was a fag even by the standards of Final Fantasy protagonists and the whole story was just emo and fedora. The gameplay mechanics were also maximum autism. 7, 9, and tactics were all great but 8 really let me down.
To be fair I haven't played since it was new but the memory of my disappointment is still vivid.

it was the first rpg that really marked me. I played the sega cd version in 1994. I was 13. although ff3 drew me in with its huge cast and world....lunar drew me in with its storytelling.
i still have my physical ps1 copies of lunar 1 and 2. i replay them every other year. they are more than childhood memories...they are still fun to this day.
the psp remake for lunar 1 is terrible.

i like the graphics in all three versions but do prefer the sega cd and ps1 versions for their authentic 16 bit feel.
i hated the intro to the psp version with the scene with the four heroes. NOT seeing that battle gives it the mythic quality it needs to be epic. it's one of those "less is more" things where when you actually see and play through the scene it KILLS the magic.
also unlike others i appreciate victor Ireland's enthusiasm to bring lunar. xseed are greedy scumbags who piggybacked off of working designs' great eye for bringing great games to north America.
