I really can't talk shit about Sabbath. They pretty much created their own genre, metal, and did it better than anyone ever has.
Their solos were amazing and the bassist and guitarist had some wicked jam solos.
The downside of sabbath is most of their albums were 50%+ filler. There're very few sabbath albums that are amazing all the way through (but there are a couple).
And it really wasn't Sabbath anymore once Ozzy left....
But Black Sabbath is a solid choice.
My favorite are Tool, Pink Floyd, AND Marilyn Manson in his prime (Golden Age of Groteque and prior).
Yeah, I know I'm gonna catch some shit for Manson, but he really is a very deep poet (in his prime, not now) with layered meanings in his songs. His stage performances were unbelievable. The audience was pretty much in a frenzy like a fascist rally.

I never really liked Ozzy's solo stuff as much. To be real, most of it sounds pretty dated and 80s-ish. I mean, there's a few great tracks, I really like Mr Crowley, Perry Mason, maybe a couple of others.
But Ozzy and Sabbath together was a fucking magic formula that neither the group nor ozzy recaptured on their own.
Also, around the 80s, Ozzy's voice blew out. In the days of Sabbath he was an amazing metal vocalist, really one of the best. But during the 80s, his voice got so bad that it's all autotuned. I mean, they didn't really call it auto-tune because no one else was doing it and there wasn't a name for it, but that's what it is. That's why it always sounded robotic from the 80s on.... and it's so much worse now.
I think Ozzy lived pretty hard smoking, drinking, doing all kinds of drugs.... and that will take it's toll on your voice, particularly if you're a singer. That and he seems pretty dimwitted these days, I can't tell if it's just that he's ridiculously high/drunk or that he actually has brain damage from hitting hard drugs way too hard.

Really Geezer Butler should be mentioned too. He's probably the most underrated bassist of all time. He didn't play just a simplified version of what the guitarist was doing like nearly every other bassist, he jammed and soloed and had a very unique style.
Really the whole black sabbath group was epic. I can't imagine how music would have been without him. Metal would probably be very different and much much shittier.
