I hate to sound elitist, but Slipknot falls into the category of nu-metal (admittedly less nu-metal than other bands in the same category), and nu-metal is an embarrassment to metal in general, in much the same way all the stove-pipe jean, combover "hardcore" shit is too (and the use of the word "hardcore" on that sub-genre bothers me a lot, too).
While I can appreciate some of Slipknot's music (there are some decent riffs), I really can't agree when you call them "God-tier". But hey, to each their own I suppose. Most people here who speak of "God-tier" have been listing the old geezers who birthed metal, and frankly I can't get into a lot of the traditional heavy metal. The respect is there for sure, but I just don't enjoy it personally.
As far as God-tier goes, I think originality and a consistent career without much negative reviewing is what makes a band "God-tier". Something that ALL metal listeners (excluding anyone new to the genre and still stuck on gateway bands, sorry - experience required to form a more rounded and valid opinion) can hear and go, "fuck, that was good". A modern example of this would probably be something like Cattle Decapitation's "Monolith of Inhumanity".
Anyways, my personal preferences go towards grind, black and blackened death-metal. I used to love thrash, etc., but I grew out of it. I listen to less metal nowadays, but my tastes have gotten heavier.
I won't comment much more on what is "God-tier" and isn't (as objectively as that could be applied), but I will share some bands I think are the tits:

I can't even fucking read what these band names are. I guess the band is trying to say "might as well not bother to know the artist name because the garbage inside the album is just as forgettable". All of these bands are struggling to seem deep and mysterious by using archaic and obscure words simply for effect - no substance. Reminds me of when I saw Cattle Decapitation's album cover for Humanure in an FYE back in my edgy teenage years. Even back then I thought it was fucking stupid and when I later discovered all the members were some variety of vegetarian their faggotism was definitely confirmed. Yeah and, honestly, I struggle to find heavier stuff these days that's good. I grew up listening to Pantera primarily and followed Phil Anselmo and Pantera's other band members to their other projects. Ultimately, Down was the only one I enjoyed and continue to listen to this day. These days I've gravitated more toward EDM to be honest for that energetic music I crave that I found in Metal when I was young. Bottom line is that today the shit being produced pales in comparison to the classics I grew up listening to. But, I guess all people say that about music as they age. I'll be 28 in June and I'm feeling it already.
