Technically you lose fidelity as the spiral changes because the disk spins at a constant speed. Not only that, as other posters said, dust and needle marks affect your sound. Really a vinyl/wax tube is technically superior than a disk and obviously a piece of plastic with no physical contact to the data layer with digital encoding would be technically superior (aka cd/bluray).
Bluray was originally designed for a studio master disc.
