Lived in a van for about 2 years, can highly recommend it, it was fucked, only ran around 30mph max so couldn't hit highways, basically helped out on farms for gas and a place to safely park at night, never stayed for more than a week. If you're near a river or lake that's a great place to start. Getting a metal container should probably be your first priority in this case, preferably one large enough to house a decent amount of water, 1 or 2 litres, but really any amount is OK.
For the best handwashing results you'll also want some kind of bucket to hold the water you boiled clean, although you don't ever REALLY have to use boiled water to wash clothes if the water's clean enough as is.
