really underrated Mastodon album. someone in the band even called it their third full length album. technically it is a compilation record, but it doesnt play like one. i believe they re-recorded all of the songs for it, and changed the track listing. so they didnt just slap two EP's together and release it that way. this is easily their heaviest album.

It's actually kind of hard - what really defines black metal? There's the sound, obviously, but then there's the isolationist / insular nature of the communities which is probably important to factor in. A band like DeafHeaven will never pull a Mayhem and start throwing sheep's heads into the audience at a gig to filter out the poseurs. Maybe that's the difference - serious black metal bands are more about a community and fuck everyone who isn't painfully serious about their music. I'd have said Satanism as well, but then there's the whole Odinism thing going on with Enslaved, etc.
