There are certainly threats to a man's family in the US despite no countries, other than North Korea, still having an "active hostility" towards it. For instance, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Those all need a large group of people to help clean it up, and "defend" the community.

I enlisted at 18.
Deployed to Afghanaland for a year and it was a fun experience. I look back on it now (24 and out of the Army) and I think it was the best decision I could have made at 18. My college is fully paid for, and I get free health care. My veteran status landed me my current job which pays over the average income for America and I made a lot of friends along the way.
I didn't do it to fight for freedom. I just did it because I didn't want to go to college, stack student debt, and suffer forever.
All in all good decision, 8/10
