It's just a way to shift the burden of paying employees off of the employer and onto the customers, who then have the option of choosing not to pay their wages.
I tip at the appropriate times in the US, always, because that's the way it is here, and i know the server's livelihood is dependent on me doing so because of the way the laws are here. But it's a bad way to do it. Tips should be what they were supposed to be, a special gratuity given voluntarily when you happen to get exceptional service. Somehow everywhere else seems to get this.

In europe, anyone who would normally be paid via tiping makes minimum wage.
In america, minimum wage ranges from 7 to 8 dollars an hour. If we had no tipping, the owners of those companies would not start paying 9 or 11 an hour. they would pay 8 dollars an hour.
So, here are your two options.
1. get paid at LEAST minimum wage (you can pay your tipped employees less, but you have to pay them at least minimum wage at the end of the year. Anything less and the owner has to compensate)
OR
These same people just make minimum wage with no tips. Your prices will still increase to "pay the new wages" but the owners will just pocket it and still pay their employees as little as possible.

it concerns every product sold. Whenever we receive a price increase it is always blamed on external factors. However, when ever you read in the news that what they blamed on the price increase. They never decrease them.
Lets say almonds. They will say it will go up from 99 cents to 1.29 because of some drought that caused the almond harvest is weak. However, you can have 6 over production of almonds in a row and the price will stick at 1.29.
No matter what the product, prices stick at high and do not decrease because it is felt as a norm.
Now, when it comes to tipped employees in america. These are low wage jobs that would normally be paid at minimum wage. (depending on the state that is something around 6.75 to 8.25 an hour)
All tipped employees are required to make at LEAST that minimum wage. If they make less then that then the employer is required to pay the difference. However, people are not such huge dicks as employers are so that collectively the tipping at the end of the year will be more like 20,000 or 25,000 a year as opposed to 15,000.
If you remove tipping from america. Just like distributors and people who have experimented with this before they increase your food prices. Sometimes with "forced gratuity" which will go to the owner of the restaurant. The owner of the restaurant will just pay his now non-tipped employees minimum wage and pocket the difference.
