Knives are tools to cut fabrics and tough materials. While not handy every second of the day, the moment in which you could really use a knife to cut something free or to cut something loose easily, you'd be happy to have one. I don't carry one on a daily basis and when a cop asked me about it once I just told him it was a gift and that I keep it for peace of mind in case I need it. He was fine with it. Cops don't care about knives as long as you don't brandish them and if you announce them.

Don't be intentionally dense. There are more fabrics and materials in the world than found in a sewing machine and you know it. You don't need to be an edgelord to think that knives can come in handy. Unless you intend to rip every rope, cord, piece of plastic, etc by hand, a small knife is handy.
