I think this last christmas, my mom asked for something like $3,000 worth of stuff, if I remember correctly. She didn't get all of it, but she did get a good bit of it.
Now, all of these presents are on top of the roughly $500~ in prepaid visa gift cards*, and neither of them seem particularly grateful for it.
I don't think people get spoiled rotten because of the excessive presents, but because parents think that replacing time with gifts is a feasible option.

Oh yeah....and to make it "better" my sister and her husband are so dumb that they couldn't graduate highschool nor get a GED. They went to "Corner Stone Correspondence School" and paid someone to do the work for them. They also got their house (literally) given to them. Aswell as their cars. Me and my wife have a $45/month power bill.
