So assuming this scenario. If a large meteorite hit earth, most likely the speed it would be traveling at relative to the earth's orbit would mean we wouldn't even realise it was happening. We wouldn't see it coming through the atmosphere or anything, it potentially would travel through in under a second, if you were beneath the impact area you would be vaporized and wouldn't even know about it
