Ritalin and adderall are very safe to use if you take a normal dose and don't tamper with the pills.
However, if you start snorting them its a whole different story, you will quickly become addicted and have trouble not using them all up.
If you aren't a person that is very curious about drugs and just wants to cram for an exam, then go ahead and try it, but don't try to chance the euphoria.

I take it. It reks your stomach after about 2-3 hours.
Basically the effects you'll feel are very concentrated focus for 2-3 hours then it slowly fades away over the course of about 12-16 hours. As the focus fades the stomach cramps get much worse. Also, it will likely make you an insomniac if you take too much. I only took 30 mg yesterday and stayed up 48 hours straight without any trouble at all. But you'll be extremely likely become extremely agitated and restless after 16 hours.

I'm definitely addicted to Adderall/amphetamines. I write code and develop software for a living so I loved taking speed to stay up for days writing code/building apps.
Unfortunately it's not sustainable. My legs turn purple, not sleeping for days, loss of feelings in arms due to repetitive stress injury (sitting and typing for 12 hrs+ straight).

One time I took 60mg of the instant release shit and was so wired I just had to do and fix something. A week earlier my room mate spilled water all over my second PS3 controller (hey Andrew) and it died. So I decided to take it apart, clean it, and put it back together. I did just that and... it fucking worked. But I didn't stop there. I then cleaned the entire house top to bottom, including the bathroom (the only time that bathroom was cleaned.) I decided to investigate and then execute putting custom firmware on my PS3. I found my room mates gun hidden in the basement, fully loaded. I changed the bearings on my long board. I wrote 5 pages of this book called "Living Like You Died Yesterday." I destroyed this desk in our sun room with an axe, for fun. And then cleaned it all up.
I love adderall. I do think it's fucked with my dopamine receptors to a degree. I was generally able to fight that with weed but I've been off weed for months and sometimes i get this crazy urge to just fucking kill myself.

I'm still fucked from taking 100+mg a day for over a year, and that was almost 3 years ago now, and I've been clean for months.
I still have an old prescription from when I used to take... I didn't take it long and took small doses but it didn't do much for me, it just made me feel slightly more awake and I had troubles sleeping (and it occasionally gave me akathisia when I woke up - terrible feeling!) Maybe I'd have a different opinion with a larger dose.
Ritalin on the other hand was the DEVIL!! I tried that shit for like a month and couldn't believe people take it all day, that shit made me think in black and white, couldn't sleep, terrible shit, clearly I do not mix well with amphetamines and such. Your mileage will vary.
