Retired AF maintainer here, and yes, you should and still can. The AF can be an outstanding career, followed by an interesting and comfy second career if you want or need it.

The Air Force has a key difference from the other services. We send our officers out to do the fighting. If they fuck up they rarely get a bunch of enlisted killed. Most of any military career isn't spent at war, it's spent at peace. Choose accordingly.

I have close friends that did years in the Marines an they loved their time but when I decided to join, they convinced me to join the Air Force. Not because they thought it was better, persay, they just regretted not getting a skills out of their experience other than how to be a marine. That's not to say you cant get a good job in the Marines, you can. But if you are about to give away the best years of your life, potentially your body, heart, and soul; just make sure you walk away with something that can make you some money right out of the gate.
Anyone can learn to pick up a rifle and learn to shoot it well. It takes a special kind of person to learn aircraft maintenance, air traffic control, HVAC, and other skills that are vital to the military and will make you big bucks on the outside.
Also, don't bank on saving your GI Bill for your children. Invest in you and make more money for yourself; that is key to make YOU successful and preparing you to take care of your family.
Good luck and take the first year one day at a time. A lot of sucks but you will have good experiences along the way.
