In Europe, private medical insurance isn't illegal. If you can afford it, you get it. Which is pretty much the same system as you have, except without rampant insurance corruption and 900 dollar band aids in the emergency room.
The difference is that, if you can't afford fancy private insurance, you have the safety net of the "national insurance" that socialized healthcare provides.
If you're an ameripoor, you're fucked. I read stories all the time of people not going to the emergency room because they're afraid of being bankrupted by even basic medical procedures.

I've taken Keppra, Depakote, Some other word with a D, Lamictal IR and Lamictal XR, as well as phenobarbital and other compounding drugs.
The expensive one is Lamictal XR. Lamictal IR has generic's, but the IR doesn't work as well as the XR in controlling my seizures, so I'm stuck paying for the name brand stuff which is actually like 475 and some change AFTER my insurance.
My epilepsy is caused by brain damage from a car accident, not a normal mental deficiency of neurotransmitters, so it's a lot harder to control my seizures.
That's why I've tried so many medicines, and got stuck on the one that works, which just happens to be extremely expensive.
I can switch to Lamitrogine IR which is cheaper and only like 50 dollars a bottle, but that would require constant doses, and I'd need well over the 90 per month my insurance covers, I'd need something like 180 a month taking them like 4 to 5 times a day, not to mention I'd probably be having seizures in my sleep which is extremely dangerous.
I 500 dollars isnt the total cost of my treatment, it's what's left over that I can't pay. I pay for EKG's CT scans, MRI's and specialists visits, I'm only 20 years old, I cannot get into university with my medical bills, and cannot make the money required at an entry level job
