There isn't really a "best first gun" you need to shoot some and see what you like. For a semi-auto, one big decision will be hammer fired (usually DA/SA) or striker fired. So I'd suggest shooting one of each. Glocks are striker fired, most Sigs, H&Ks, and Berettas are DA/SA.

I carry a knife every day and a multitool as well it I'm at work. I use my knife at homes quite a few times a day, I farm and butcher so there's a lot of small shit and cords and such I need to cut quite often that I don't use my meat knives for I feel naked without my pocket knife but that's just because I feel it all the time and helps me remember that I haven't left it somewhere on accident so just carry it all the time. Pepper spray may sound gay, but it's pretty effective. Collapsible baton is another option, but might not be legal in your state/area. Also, you can easily carry a climbing carabiner with you legally, but in a pinch the right sized carabiner can be used as brass knuckles. Just an idea.

as far as a revolver goes they are not many moving parts so they should always work. S&W Jframes(current modles are airwights) are pretty standard but can get expensive, and I would suggest +P. You can also pick up a tarus for under 300$.
I would suggest a semi auto though, glocks are cheap and realiable. Sigs are expensive and some of the best out there. There is also plenty middle of the ground manufactures / models to choose from. If you can go to a local gun range and rent and try some out, lots of places also have try before you buy programs.
