Of all the fights I've seen most were decided by surprise and the first hit.
Of the fights I've seen that were decided by technical expertise, it was usually a boxer kicking the shit out of a guy.
I've never seen karate or kung fu work. Punches can't be blocked Capt. Kirk style (Shatner is a black belt in kenpo karate).

Kung Fu styles are shit.
Silat styles are shit.
Even Dumog is shit.
Even the non-acrobat styles of Asian martial arts are generally shit (obvious exceptions exist like Thai boxing).
Their problem is that they generally use moves that don't work on resisting opponents (like blocking a punch), waste time on kata, don't practice on resisting opponents, waste time on conditioning exercises that tire you out w/o giving you great attributes (one guy had to stand in a horse stance for 8 fucking hours, that won't do 1/10th as much as a 3 sets of 5 squats for your kicking power).
If you are interested in fighting then take up any of the styles that have dominated in real free-fighting
- boxing
- kickboxing / thai boxing
- wrestling
- bjj / (some) judo
Many styles / movements can be made to seem real in the controlled environment of a martial arts school where the outcome is pre-determined -- and it is just as pre-determined as pro wrestling!!!!
Even Aikido can seem to work in a fucking dojo, just not in the ring.
