Far Cry is just "walk for 15 minutes that way" "now walk 15 minutes back". Fast travel is a cop-out cover for the fact that they have eleventy-three hectacres of game world and like 13 unique assets.
They need to either (a) put enough shit in the game world to make traveling from A to B an engaging experience worthy of the player's time, or (b) stop sending players from A to B and back again and calling it gameplay.

I don't give a shit if there's no cars. There weren't cars in Doom, all you could do in Doom was walk but walking was an engaging and challenge core gameplay experience.

Stop making game worlds and start making games. And that's what this thread is about, Ubisoft pouring all this time and effort into making a realistic caveman sim without stopping to think whether or not living like a realistic caveman is actually an experience that sustains player enjoyment (hint: it isn't, except arguably for you)
It's not that an accurate prehistoric setting can't be an entertaining one for a game, that it needs helicopters and grenade launchers and mutants and all this other bullshit, it's that the game needs to be about more than just walking the fuck around and occasionally throwing rocks at dudes. You can't just take all the fun elements out of a series under the pretext of "historical accuracy" and then NOT REPLACE THEM WITH OTHER FUN THINGS.
It's an uninspired fetch-quest riddled "open world" abortion that's not ever seen the loving hands of a level designer or gameplay director. Just a new coat of paint on a rusted old hulk, only now with 100% less exploding shit to cover that fact up!

Here's the test:
How long can you survive in Far Cry Primal if all you do is walk? No stopping in safe spots or backtracking, just walking around without attacking or jumping or dodging or looking for cover or reloading or any of that.
If the answer is longer than about 2 minutes, on average, you have a shitty game on your hands.
Most great games seldom go more than a minute or two of linear progress without SOME sort of obstacle; a puzzle, a platforming challenge, an enemy encounter, a resource need, any sort of wits or reflex test to keep the player engaged.
Games like Primal take games designed this way and then just stretch the map out so that instead of 1-2 minutes between challenges, it's 10-20, that way they can lay claim to all sorts of hours of gameplay they don't really provide and hype up an "expansive world" that's really just a much smaller world with buffers taped to it.
It's just bad game design, hiding behind a cloak of "realism" because in real life distances are great, walking takes time, and exciting stuff isn't always happening.

This isn't the biggest map FarCry has done, and it's come a long way to fix boring worlds. I think FarCrys worlds since FC3 have been lush and vibrant, and a lot fo people remark at how animated they are. Compared to MGSV that's an example of how NOT to do it.
For game about exploring and hunting like Primal SHOULD BE ABOUT, it fits the motif and the genre and the atmosphere and the immersion.
To not have a game like FarCry you'd have a linear corridor game, which to be honest a lot of people are sick of, since we all grew up on that shit.
The beast master elements really do fill in the "other fun things" in the game, or at least, they're suppose to.
As for missions, they're not entirely bad, more escort missions and they have explore cave missions, and they have spirit quest missions, there is a variety.
if you were talking Fallout 4, it's even worse if it's not a fetch quest it's a kill em all quest. That's it. Far Cry is actually one of the few games outside of AssCreed that have a good verity.
But fetch quest is the bread and butter of open world games, and i doubt you'll EVER see an open world game NOT have them in it. Fetch quests is simple enough to allow the player to dynamicly accomplish the mission, AND explore the game world, which is AMAZINGLY good in Primal.
If you don't like it, cryogenically freeze yourself for 20 more years and hope it gets better, because that's about the best there is.
Play Assassin's creed syndicate, it's got a beautiful world you can rope scale over and horse buggy ride through, but to be honest it's like GTAV where it tries to emulate the real world, and since we know what the world of a city should be like, always falls flat and feels fake.
but yeah, you're wrong, it's great. You're just getting bored of how video games are.

But I think the larger point is more that games like Far Cry 1 at least covered up this lack of inspired gameplay with an inspired setting to keep things interesting.
Primal is actually very much like Fallout; it's a largely uninteresting wasteland devoid of much to do. But unlike, say, Fallout 3, it's not coming at a time when games like that are new and interesting just by virtue of their size.

It's not about the difficulty of the challenges, it's the distance between them.
Bayonetta could have been 5 times as long and 5 times worse if they just added 15 minutes of walking between each enemy encounter. Just because the challenges are there and are worthwhile doesn't excuse all the filler bullshit in between, that's my point.
It may challenge your skill, but only after you walk for 12 minutes to the location of the MacGuffin. The 12 minutes in between are what I'm concerned about.

AssCreed the latest is almost identical to Asscreed1, in almost every way but the map. Seems like that's the one thing you hate the most, is the map being the same.
That shit happens, and it doesn't make a worse game, it's true, but you can't explain how the game feels like FarCry 4, since you're not driving or flying over the same map. Since you walk in different ways with different objectives it's only looks the same from the Map Screen, which in all honesty is something i could accept as a legit complaint that the GUI is doesn't work with the games theme.

exactly, compared to the game the've openly admitted to ripping of MGS, they're doing that game so wrong, except they have some good symbolism.
