I'd like to throw out how I do/don't tip tho.
I base my experience on, how fast I receive my food, how well it is prepared, how much service my waiter/waitress gives me, how many others my waiter/waitress is attending, how polite my waiter/waitress is to me, and how much time I have spent eating or hanging around past a 30 minute mark.
In your average place there should be waiters/waitresses competing for tables, and on average might get 3-5$ a tip per table, if they are able to hit 3 tables minimum per hour, they are making 9-15$ an hour, give or take from those who do not tip.
I have been to places before where there is 1 person working, and the place is either full, or empty. Normally if the place is full, I tip about 5$ for every 30-60 minutes I am there, regardless of how often I am attended to, as long as my food arrives in decent time. When the place lacks business and only 1 person is working, I've found myself leaving 20$ tips, out of pity.
Also, to all the pizza delivery boys arguing in here, I normally tip for delivery, but I'd rather tip the cook for their good job, not some last minute mailman. Your debates are making me severely rethink ever getting delivery again, maybe from now on I'll just go pick up an order and tip whoever made my pizza.
