How is 0-100 any more intuitive than 32-212? They are both arbitrary. Also 180 degree difference between freezing and boiling in F
>>
They've written a book about Fahrenheit, they can't just change to Celsius anymore.
>>
in defense of fahrenheit:

-0-100 in fahrenheit are more applicable to temperatures people actually live in
-each degree is smaller, making generalizations like 50s, 70s, etc. more useful.
-Hitler used Celcius.

>implying America is the only country that doesn't use the metric system.
>>
>>671668402
Because the metric system was designed by bureaucrats and number-crunchers to make record-keeping and analysis simpler. It has no cultural basis. The imperial system was just a formalization of units of measure actually in-use by the public at large. These were units of the people, by the people, and for the people, crafted by their specific needs and mutual understanding.

In other words, the imperial system is symbolic of liberty; the metric system, of tyrrany.

No matter where you go in the world, beer is measured off in pints, and the lethal injection is measured off in milliliters. The "official" system of weights and measures is only about which type of use (and user) the nation is declaring its loyalty to.

So where other countries formalized their commitment to sucking the cocks of bean counters, bureaucrats, and politicians, the US instead formalized their commitment to the common people.

we drink proper pints. 568 mL to the fill line. although our beer actually has a decent head on it (unlike like the beer flavored cordial you lot swill) so you are likely to get more like 600mL.

I buy meat and vegetables kilograms (kilo). Buy spices in grams or milligrams and cereal in grams. Milk in liters.

Beer bottles measure in milliliters (mils). Spirits in liters, unless you're a soft cunt.

Height of a person I had to learn in feet and inches because of my mum. She's only just out of the habit of using 'stone' as a measure of weight.

Beer glasses had a name for the size. No one changed that name or serving size. For young people, 'pint' means 'big beer.'

Big shock moment:

THIS IS TRUE EVERYWHERE

Just about everywhere in the world, a mixture of imperial and metric is used based on current common conventions. People love to point out that metric is simpler for calculations because it's mathematically consistent and indeed, there is no US high school chemistry class where you measure things in pints and pounds.

The "officially adopted" system doesn't change daily life, people still measure how they want to measure, which is how they've always measured. All the official declaration of metric does is put one gigantic stride between the government and the people, as it declares its "official" loyalty to the units of measure in use by the technocratic elite.

The "official" system of weights and measures doesn't mandate a change at the level of every bar and pub, nor for that matter at the level of any given research center or manufacturing plant.

Yeah. People measure how they want. But, dude, let me say this. I've got no idea what a 'pound' weighs, what an ounce fills, or how long a mile is.

When I say I buy meat in kilograms, I mean that I understand what a kilogram of meat is. Fuck "official system." That's my personal system.

If I want inches, I divide centimetres by 2.5, and metres by 0.3 to get feet. Imperial is used casually by a few older people. It's increasingly useless.

Metrication in Australia took 22 years. Finished in 1988. Some people still use old measures, but that is rapidly fading.

>>
>>671672228
But you have to be more specific by even ignoring your whole "rule of 10" that you love so much. A 10 temp range in Celsius is too big of a to express. I can't just say it will be in the "20s" today as, even on your own scale that goes from chilly to warm. If I say it will be in the 70s today, most would think that is nice. 80s now we are getting warm, 90s hot, or going the other way 60s nice/chilly depending on where your from, etc.

Don't get me wrong, for scientific measurements, metric is better, which is why its used in scientific circles. And all metric measurements are better/easier to get then standard ones, but I don't have any issues with climate temperature being expressed in Fahrenheit.
>>

> Maintenance, repairs, and upgrades carry dual measures

When equipment requires the work, conduct the change. Retain older equipment in the older measure. Let people do conversions where necessary. As I said before, change takes time.

I live in Australia, where we went from 1966 to 1988 slowly metricating. Shit takes time. And since the US has already pussy-footed about with metrication, it doesn't seem too much to step a little further.

You know. Slowly. Over time. Investing in change. Not picking one day in the year to rip everything to shit and paint new numbers on.

Wait. You like fahrenheit because it's easier to refer to temperature in units of ten? Looks like I'm not the only one who likes it.

Here's a rule of ten:
Low tens. High tens. Low twenties. High twenties. Mid twenties. Doesn't matter. When you know the system, it becomes easier to understand.

If I told someone it was going to be "Low 20" today, they'd know it was going to be nice. If I told them "Under 10" they'd rug up like fuck.

I see this weather report, and I can tell at a glance what the ranges of temperature are. At the social level, it's what you grow with. And the system that younger people in America grow with could be metric. Which, as you said, can be used in scientific circles too.

1/3 of a meter is about 33cm. Though not exact, it's an inaccuracy lower than "that point shits too small to worry about." And if you're using a fucking tape measure, it's nought to worry over.

But we could go to 33.3cm. Which is on most every metric ruler. But if you're going that accurate, you may as well call it 333mm (a better scale for small projects). We could go to 33.33cm (or 333.3mm), but then you're talking about measures thinner than a pencil lead.

Works wonders for giant houses AND smaller projects. It scales well, you see. By tens. It'll do your walls and your door hinges.

people that bitch about Fahrenheit are stupid anyways. You can't even say that it's used for science or engineering, because for any calculations you end up converting celcius to Kelvin anyways.

Fahrenheit was based more on humans. 100 degrees was around human body temperature.

Convert Fahrenheit to Kelvin: (°F + 459.67) × 5/9

For engineering purposes, celcius is easier to convert from.

>>
>>671673108
Wow.. i know what you are trying to say .. but please ..

1. Celsius doesn't start at waters freezing point nor does it end at waters boiling point.. The picture referred to however starts at 0 degree Celsius which is the waters freezing point and ends at 100 degree Celsius which is waters boiling point .. you can easily have infinite + degree Celsius but you can only go down to 273.15 degrees Celsius which is called "absolute zero" where everything is so cold, that nothing can move and thus have no energy because the entropy and enthalpy reaches the minimum. which leads me to the second correction.

2. Kelvin doesn't start at absolute 0 degrees, as degrees is a direct correspondent to Celsius, and 0 degree Celsius is waters freezing point as we learned earlier in my post.. however what you meant was "Kelvin starts at absolute zero or at 0 Kelvins...

3.
Mercury is indeed outdated because of health concerns.. however it is still used in "float valves, mercury switches, mercury relays, fluorescent lamps"

If i ask for pipe its in millimeters or BSP, but seeing as BSP is not imperial i am still correct.
Calories is not imperial, its the amount of energy required to heat one gram of water through 1 kelvin, pretty sure that's metric.
Curies are not imperial, they are a unit to convey a sense of size, telling someone 0.6 micro curies and 222000 Becquerels give completely different understanding, it's a similar situation in particle physics, everything is measured in electron volts. That doesn't make electron volts imperial, its just more intuitive than 0.000000000001 joules.

We're smart, 100 degrees means hot as fuck, 0 degrees means it's cold as fuck
>inb4 boiling point freezing point durr
Nigger when was the last time you used a thermometer to boil water, or to make ice? Yeah fucking never
When was the last time you checked the temperature outside? Like two fucking minutes ago
It's 60 degrees out right now. Not warm, not cold. I bet you retards are at like 27 or some gay shit.

Caloreis are fucking metric you inbred shitposter

>curie
Curie was a fucking FRENCH scientist. Also metric.

>energy
>horsepower
Oh boy and you say you are an engineer ?
Our gradschool student are better than this. Horsepower is a measurement of POWER not of energy. And everyone uses kw except for marketing cars. In Japan/Korea/Europe, it is against the law to provide a power only in hp, you must provide kw and then only you are allowed to give hp as a supplement.

Nigga, Farhneheit is based on mercury dilatation. Have you ever even USED a mercury thermometer ? If not, then your only argument for F instead of C is "but muh education". No. Tradition is not a good argument about rationally determining which system is the best.
