I try everything. Started autocrossing way back when I first obtained my license and went from there to HPDE, 125cc karts, rallycross, currently the main moneywaster is drifting. I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and most bash events are just a giant party. But I like trying pretty much anything.

I take local jobs like bulk stickers for businesses, bands, teams, or signage for storefront businesses. It is not that hard to get into but sourcing fresh customers is the tricky part. Once you get a decent word of mouth going it starts snowballing but there are sometimes slow months where I want to push business a bit harder.
You can pick up the R31 plotter I use on Ebay for about $250ish with some included junk vinyl that is good to practice on. It's a cheap chinese plotter but it has lasted me quite a few years so far with only a few hiccups.

The majority of guys who go to slide in practice events that are not considered competition in any way. Yes there is a competitive side to it and many people go into the Pro-Am events or Professional series with that in mine but the majority of people taking part are no different than the average skier or snowboarder. They go to the hill to practice and hone their skills while having a blast. It really is a ton of fun and definitely applicable to any of the other driving events I have done like rallycrossing, atuocrossing, or HPDE trackdays.

I started off with the Rotax 125cc, they were common around here as a good start into 125cc shifter. After a couple seasons in Rotax I moved up to standard 125cc shifters with an older model Birel but I only raced a bit more before I started getting more and more into full size cars and dumping money into HDPE for a while. I still miss the action packed racecraft that it required and racing almost any given weekend. Kart memberships locally are about $250 and to head to the track it is only about $40 all day. It was way cheaper than a trackday at the local circuit being $200 a day.

HDPE? I started in the junior class which made transition to 4 stroke unlimited easy as the age restriction was 15 instead of 16, but I had to run a smaller carb but could weigh less. We cleaned house. Most 2 stroke classes were yammy 100cc direct drive and we stomped the livin' crap out of them! We then moved to full size circle track cars, then life took over and stepped back from active competition. Play now with a 16 foot 1000hp boat on the odd weekend. Drive the shit outta your stuff... And enjoy. You'll get old soon enough...

HPDE is basically High Performance Driver Education. Most NASA or SCCA trackday events are based around that but it is also mildly competitive and the current local NASA days are setup in a way that you have classes, compete and are timed. After being passed off for driving clean for a certain number of events you get bumped up and can race wheel to wheel, but the cost of entry also goes up at that point since you are basically looking to cage a car and all that. It is not too bad if you have focus, but I am all over the place and couldn't decide what kind of class I'd want to run. Currently Spec 350z is really popular and seems to be the most entertaining class.
